Frequently asked questions
Is WordDex free?
Yes. WordDex is free to download and includes daily practice, beginner decks, and the first three topics free in each exam line (JLPT, TOEIC, TOPIK). Premium is available for unlimited lessons and full deck access.
How is WordDex different from other language apps?
Most language apps teach from a fixed curriculum. WordDex builds full 12-round lessons from words you scan in real life — menus, signs, manga, subtitles — so your vocabulary comes from your world, not a textbook sequence. Exam decks are available when you want structured study.
What languages does WordDex support?
WordDex supports 15+ languages including Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Thai, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Esperanto.
How does scanning work?
Point your camera at text — a menu, sign, product label, manga panel, or screenshot. WordDex reads the text and lets you select the word you want to learn. The app then automatically builds a full 12-round lesson around that word.
Does WordDex work for JLPT, TOEIC, and TOPIK?
Yes. WordDex includes pre-loaded exam decks for JLPT (Japanese), TOEIC (English), and TOPIK (Korean). The first three topics in each line are free. Every deck word gets the same 12-round lesson format as a scanned word.
Is there an Android version?
WordDex is available on iOS now. Android is planned.
What is a lesson in WordDex?
A lesson is a 12-round interactive practice session built around a single word. Rounds include meaning matching, fill-in-the-blank, sentence building, and speaking. Lessons are automatically built when you scan a word or select one from a deck.
What is the Dex?
Your Dex is your personal vocabulary collection. Every word you complete a lesson for is collected into your Dex. Spaced repetition brings words back for review at optimal intervals so they stick long-term.
What does Premium include?
Premium unlocks unlimited lessons, full access to all exam decks, and an ad-free experience. The free tier includes daily practice limits and free starter topics in each exam line.
Do I need to know the language before I can scan?
Basic familiarity helps, but WordDex includes beginner alphabet decks for several languages. Once you can recognize characters, scanning is a great way to build vocabulary from real text even at an early stage.
Can I use WordDex without scanning?
Yes. You can study from pre-loaded exam decks and beginner packs without scanning anything. Every deck word opens the same 12-round lesson format. Scanning is optional but adds words from your real-world environment.
Is WordDex good for complete beginners?
WordDex works best once you have basic familiarity with a language. Beginner alphabet decks and Essential 100 packs are available, but a structured beginner course is still a good starting point. WordDex shines when you are ready to start reading real text.
Does WordDex support furigana for Japanese?
Yes. WordDex displays furigana readings alongside kanji in lessons, so you can focus on meaning and usage while building kanji knowledge over time.
Where is WordDex made?
WordDex is built in Tokyo by a language learner who needed a better way to learn vocabulary from real-world text.
