How is WordDex different from other language apps?
Most language apps hand you their word list. WordDex builds a 12-round lesson from your life: scan a word, describe a situation such as ordering coffee or a doctor's visit, or shake your phone and Dexy builds a surprise lesson from your interests and learner profile.
What languages does WordDex support?
WordDex supports 16 languages: English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Thai, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Esperanto.
How does scanning work?
Point your camera at text — a menu, sign, product label, manga panel, or screenshot. WordDex reads the text and lets you select the word you want to learn. The app then automatically builds a full 12-round lesson around that word.
Does WordDex work for JLPT, TOEIC, and TOPIK?
Yes. WordDex includes curated exam decks for JLPT (Japanese), TOEIC (English), and TOPIK (Korean), plus free beginner decks for every language. Every deck word gets the same 12-round lesson as a scanned word, a described situation, or a shake lesson.
Is there an Android version?
WordDex is available on iOS now. Android is planned.
What is a lesson in WordDex?
A lesson is a 12-round practice session: matching, fill-in-the-blank, sentence building, and speaking out loud. WordDex builds one when you scan a word, describe a situation or topic, shake your phone, or open a word from a deck.
What is the Dex?
Your Personal Dex is a growing record of the language you have met. Every word you catch joins it, and spaced repetition brings each word back right when you need it.
What does Premium include?
Premium unlocks generous lesson creation, full Word Scope access, and an ad-free experience. Free includes shake, scan, learn, and review, plus beginner decks and reading courses. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
Do I need to know the language before I can scan?
Basic familiarity helps, but WordDex includes beginner alphabet decks for several languages. Once you can recognize characters, scanning is a great way to build vocabulary from real text even at an early stage.
Can I use WordDex without scanning?
Yes. Type a situation or topic, such as ordering coffee or dinosaurs, and WordDex builds a lesson around it. Shake your phone and Dexy wakes up with a surprise lesson from your interests and learner profile. You can also study beginner decks, reading courses, and curated JLPT, TOPIK, and TOEIC decks.
Is WordDex good for complete beginners?
Yes. Built-in reading courses teach Hiragana, Katakana, and Hangul from zero, and free beginner decks are available for every language. You can also just shake. WordDex is not a full grammar course, and it is especially useful once you start meeting words in real life.
Does WordDex support furigana for Japanese?
Yes. WordDex displays furigana readings alongside kanji in lessons, so you can focus on meaning and usage while building kanji knowledge over time.

What is Word Scope?
Word Scope goes deeper on any word: real conversational usage, grammar, tone, and what a native speaker would say instead. Full Word Scope access is part of Premium.
